Solar Watch

Using  a bit of scrap you can convert your old digital watch into a batteryless watch entirely based on solar energy.The concept being the solar charge is stored in the caps which run the watch even when there is no solar energy available.Although the charge lasts for a few hours in darkness(62mins to be precise)..still its a very good model to explain the very basics of a solar pv system.Happy tinkering….

The use of the zener is to limit the voltage drop across the watch.which should not go beyond 3v ..i chose a scrap diode from an old radio with the panel so my voltage apparently never went over 3v.

Proximity Sensor (Light Based)

I often used to wonder why did the brightness of my phone and my friend`s MacbookPRO used to vary when we went closer.Its basically due to the light sensor which may also be called to proximity sensor.The closer you go the brighter the light.

When you go closer the light decreases and so the led lights up..the screen shows the respective Analog values..

Processing :The introduction

Arduino brought me closer to processing as both are infact quite related.

Processing helps you learn programming by visualising it….so instead of writing a 50 line code in C to draw a circle you just write a one line code in processing..

Imagine you can the arrays u created..the variables changing the values..etc thats all possible..

Here one of my wierd looking sketches( you call a program a sketch)

They are very simple and this is all programming…

Arduino:The Introduction

Well I have been working for a while on the sponsored ( beta testing) board given to me by Teachers and Seniors.Its called a DOPEDUINO(Doped Arduino).Its an indian clone of Arduino duemolive  with an onboard Atmega168 preburnt with arduino bootloader. I`ll soon be posting great step by step tutorials on how to get started with it. Arduino–Is an opesource hardware prototyping platform that allows you to do what is called “Physical Computing”.You interact with the outside world thru sensors and process the input and produce an output.

However using an Arduino u can satisfy the DIY Guy in you but you dont get to learn much about the internal working of the chips and all as the bootloader makes it easier for you by hiding things.But still its better than those AVR`s/8051  we used at our college projects in Line followers,Edge detectors etc which would often fail,dont burn,give an unexpected error at the time of competition.

I have faced it all..Although i could just blink things on 8051 architecture.But could do a lot more on an AVR ( Thanks to CodeVision AVR)..i tried and tried but couldn`t get my Atmega 16l to read the 5v and out of frustration (  i was the one responsible for all the electronics part in my gp) i literally broke one chip..( they are quite expensive)..

Then i thought may be Arduino would be better….

Tinker(Arduniuns must be familiar): Attempt to repair or improve something in a casual or desultory way, often to no useful effect.

I felt the need for such a blog as the stuff mentioned on sites related to DIY`s are not available in India and in order to get it done one needs to get it shipped …and for tinkering as a past time activity very few actually kinda import that stuff…ultimately the desire to make that envisioned gadget fades and rests in the deep corners of our minds.Although we cant change this but we can follow the very old policy   “Best Out Of what is available”.

So in my blog i would like to capture all that stuff which “the technically inclined” can do to follow their inner voice…that is to “Create“.

If you ever say to yourself that if i could…CREATE this gadget…that does this and that without spending much…then this is the right place for you..
